“Lara Grufferty is a visual artist from Cork, Ireland, specialising in a diverse range of printmaking techniques. Experimentation and play are quintessential to Lara in her practice, she tries to approach her practice with humour, joy, and a smile. Lara’s visual practice is a visual record of her love affair with vibrant and opulent colours outputted through print processes – primarily monoprint. She builds layers of colours through these processes, observing how they intermingle on the surface of the paper. Her use of colour is both intuitive and arbitrary, often decided only after the previous layer of colour has been printed. In this way, Lara’s practice and approach towards print processes becomes alchemistic and ritualistic. The titles of Lara’s prints often provide insight into colour inspirations and themes present in the compositions. However, the abstract nature of her work, as well as leaving the meaning of the work as ambiguous as possible, is an invitation to the spectator to imagine their own narrative and interpretations surrounding the work.
Her silkscreen print ‘Four X Four,’ was informed by her current area of focus of experimenting with printmaking processes beyond the 2D plane of the paper. She does this by folding her prints to create tessellating patterns and creating printed paper sculptures. The addition of paper sculpture furthers this as the highlights and shadows created by the folds further challenges the viewer’s perception of colours used. ‘Four X Four’ mimics this by using transparent screen-print inks layered on top of each other to create tessellating patterns.”
