Ashley Tristán, also known as Moonhowler Press, was born and raised in Laredo, along the Texas-Mexico Frontera. They received their BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 2014. Their work revolves around the Mexican-American/Latinx lifestyle as seen through their childhood, what it means to grow up on La Frontera, how their culture has become an important part of their identity as an artist, and portraying their struggle with anxiety and disassociation. The belief in magia plays a huge role in their work and personal life, gaining lots of inspiration from home remedios, leyendas urbanas, and how folk magia has weaved itself into the border. Accessibility and affordability are integral to the way that Moonhowler Press functions. One of the main goals is to help bridge the gap between the art world and common folk. Making art accessible to folks in the working class and finding ways to give back to our local community.
